El Paso Electric Signs Smart Grid Investment Grant

April 07, 2010

El Paso Electric and the Department of Energy (DOE) have signed a grant agreement that will provide El Paso Electric with up to $1,014,414 to help fund the implementation of smart grid technology in its service territory. The funding for this grant was made possible through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, which seeks to help bring the country’s electrical grid to the forefront of technological advancement.

El Paso Electric will continue with the implementation of a Distribution Automation Project that will benefit our customers with improved reliability and efficiency in energy delivery. Through the new technology, El Paso Electric will be better able to monitor and restore its system during emergency conditions.

“We are extremely pleased to receive this grant opportunity and recognition for our project,” said El Paso Electric’s CEO David Stevens. “Our customers will benefit through the implementation of this new technology and the reliability it provides. We are also grateful to our government officials who strongly supported our efforts to secure the funding, and to our employees who have dedicated themselves to making this project a success."
