Students in New Mexico "Get Wise" to Energy Efficiency

January 20, 2009

More than 2,800 fifth-grade students from 28 schools in New Mexico are learning about the importance of energy efficiency and water conservation in their homes through El Paso Electric’s sponsorship of the Living Wise® Energy Education Program which provides educational activities in the classroom and hands-on projects for students and their families.

After receiving classroom instruction on how to save energy and water, students were given a Living Wise kit which includes energy and water saving devices such as a compact fluorescent light bulb and high efficiency shower head. The conservation devices go home with the students so they can work with their parents and families to implement the energy conservation strategies they learned in the classroom.

“Education is a fundamental component of El Paso Electric’s energy efficiency efforts,” said David Carpenter, El Paso Electric Vice President of Regulatory Services and Controller. “We believe this program not only teaches students to be more aware of their environment, but it also helps them understand that they really can make a difference in their own homes when it comes to conserving energy and resources.”
