El Paso Electric Receives Recognition from the Las Cruces Public Schools for Energy Efficiency Education

May 01, 2009

The Las Cruces Public Schools Board of Education will recognize El Paso Electric for its efforts in educating students about energy efficiency and conservation during its school board meeting at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 5 in the boardroom of the LCPS Administration Building, 505 S. Main St., Loretto Towne Centre, Suite 249.

For the past year, more than 2,500 fifth-grade students from 30 schools in Southern New Mexico have learned about the importance of energy efficiency and water conservation in their homes through El Paso Electric’s sponsorship of the Living Wise® Energy Education Program. This program provides educational activities in the classroom and hands-on projects for students and their families. After receiving classroom instruction on how to save energy and water, students were given a Living Wise kit, which included energy and water saving devices such as a compact fluorescent light bulb and high efficiency showerhead. The conservation devices go home with the students so they can work with their parents and families to implement the energy conservation strategies they learned in the classroom.

El Paso Electric will continue to offer the Living Wise Program to Southern New Mexico fifth-graders during the next school year. “Education is a fundamental component of El Paso Electric’s energy efficiency efforts,” said Paul Royalty, Manager of Energy Efficiency and Utilization at El Paso Electric. “We believe this program not only teaches students to be more aware of their environment, but it also helps them understand that they really can make a difference in their own homes when it comes to conserving energy and resources.”
