El Paso Electric Establishes $350,000 Endowment to Benefit U.T. El Paso

Donation honors long-time board member George Edwards

At a breakfast reception this morning that recognized the community service efforts of its employees, El Paso Electric Chief Executive Officer David Stevens announced that El Paso Electric was providing $350,000 to fund research activities at U.T. El Paso.

The donation provides $250,000 to the establishment of the George W. Edwards, Jr. Distinguished Professorship in the College of Engineering. The permanent endowment will benefit U.T. El Paso's College of Engineering and will be used to further research in the areas of renewable energy and storage of energy. Edwards has been a member of El Paso Electric's board of directors since 1992 and served as its chairman for 12 years. He has served in management and executive positions at Georgia Power Company; served as chairman, president and CEO of United Illuminating Co and president, CEO and director for Kansas City Southern Railway Company. He has served on the boards of directors of Georgia Power Company, United Illuminating Company, Peoples Bank, Blue Cross/Blue Shield of Connecticut, and Kansas City Southern Industries. Edwards has been awarded 3 Bronze Stars, 2 Army Commendation Medals, and an Air Medal for Service in Vietnam and Germany.

The donation will also provide funding of $100,000 to the El Paso Electric Graduate Fellows Program. These funds will benefit the University's College of Business Administration and will be used to provide fellowships to students pursuing their graduate studies in Business Administration or related disciplines. Endowment proceeds will support the enhancement of their research initiatives.

"We hope this endowment will attract talented and dedicated students who will make significant contributions to the development of renewable energy technologies and to our local communities."
